Dorothy Armstrong will host an evening that is aimed at parents, teachers and those who work with children with conditions such as Asperger’s syndrome, DCD (dyspraxia) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder or those with anger issues.  It will cover the following issues: 

• ·        What is self-esteem and how is it developed
• ·        Developmental levels and self-esteem
• ·        Self-esteem and resilience (bounce back ability)
• ·        Building your child’s self-esteem 

 

Dorothy is an Occupational Therapist with a private practice in Maynooth.  She has both a degree and a Masters and is currently studying towards a PhD in the area of dyspraxia.  She is also a lecturer in occupational therapy at the National University of Galway.

Nutrition for Children with Special Needs

This seminar looks at food as more than ‘fuel’ and the proven benefits of nutrition on attention span, concentration, emotional response and mood. The seminar will look at foods that are particularly beneficial and there will be space for public and private questions afterwards so that specific questions can be answered.

Information on Membership of the Toys, Technology and Training Project

You can register for membership to borrow from the TTT catalogue at any Kildare Library branch. The service is free of charge to those resident or working in Kildare.  All we need is a letter of recommendation from a professional who is working with your child – e.g. GP, OT, SLT, Physiotherapist, Resource Teacher etc. The letter just needs to say that your child would benefit from having access to the service.

Bring the letter with you when you go to your nearest library and fill out an application form. They will send your application to either Athy or Leixlip library (where the 2 collections are stored) and staff there will process it and either post it back to you or send it back to your nearest branch library for you to collect.

 

Once you have your membership card you can borrow up to 3 items from the catalogue for up to 3 weeks (the items can also be renewed twice online or over the phone if you wish to keep them longer providing no one else is waiting for the items).

You can

• request and return the items in person at your local branch library (which could take a number of weeks)
• or email either Athy or Leixlip Library depending on which catalogue you are borrowing from and ask them to send them onto you in your local branch
• or drop in to Athy or Leixlip libraries directly to borrow items or return items (the fastest way to access the collection)

 

When you fill out the registration form please tick the box that allows us to email you and provide us with your email address so that we can send you emails about upcoming talks and training sessions that we provide as part of the Training element of the Toys, Technology and Training Project. All talks/workshops are free and open to everyone.

 

You can ask for a hardcopy of the Leixlip Toy Collection Catalogue at any Kildare library branch. The Athy catalogue is now out of print. But both catalogues are available to view or download from our website at the following link:

Library staff are not qualified to advise you about which toy or item from the assistive technology collection is suitable for your child or how to use any of the equipment, software or technology. This should be done in consultation with the professionals who are working with your child. Our advice is to bring the catalogue to them and ask them to suggest the items they think would be most suitable for your child.
